Throughout her life to date, whether as an Olympic swimmer, an HIV/AIDS awareness activist in Africa and a sports-education advocate throughout Canada - MBA alumnae Katie Brambley had always had her eye on McGill.

Having worked in the Seychelles as a Canadian International Development Agency education and development officer and at home for Canadian Interuniversity Sport, the governing body for the country's university athletics, Katie found herself right at home during her time at McGill.

During her time pursuing the MBA, she founded and served as president of the McGill Women's MBA Association. She also volunteered with several non-profits, including the United Nations' Sport-In-A-Box community-based sport- and cultural-education program and Right to Play, an athlete-driven international humanitarian organization.

While Katie missed qualifying for the 1996 Olympics by one-tenth of a second, she returned again in 2000 to successfully qualify for the Sydney summer games where she and her relay team placed fifth overall. She continued to swim after her MBA classes at War Memorial pool, one of many on-campus facilities for students. It was a fine continuation of childhood days of competitive swimming, and served her well as an MBA student.

"I was 11, getting up at 4:30 a.m. for swimming practice, then swimming after school and not getting home till 8:30 p.m.," she said. "Balancing a busy life became second nature."

One of the things Katie always liked about McGill was how the Management faculty was known not only for its curriculum and research, but also for its globally minded and community-oriented students.

"Most of the bosses that I had were MBA graduates or had masters degrees," she says. "I was looking at the road ahead, at the positions I wanted, and realized the importance of having such training. I didn't have a background in business and I thought that was an area I could improve upon. I was excited about the doors that would open with an MBA. It's been such a good experience."
